Haitian Flag Day Celebration 2023

This past Saturday, May 20th, the Haitian Center of Evansville held their first annual Haitian Flag Day celebration. We are thankful to our friends at Y&E Community Center for allowing us to use their space for our celebration.

Over 150 members of the Haitian community and friends joined to play games, eat Haitian food, enjoy the music, and make new connections.

We're looking forward to another chance to share Haitian culture with our community next year!

What is Haitian Flag Day?

Haitian Flag Day commemorates the adoption of Haiti's first flag on May 18th, 1803. The first flag was created by Jean-Jacques Dessalines, one of the leaders of the Haitian Revolution. He ripped out the white middle section of the French flag and asked his god-daughter to sew together the remaining red and blue halves. The coat of arms of Haiti is in the middle of the flag with the motto "L'union fait la Force" (Unity makes strength) below.
